AAA battery reference
A AAA battery is a 1.5V cylindrical alkaline cell 10.5mm in diameter and 44.5mm long — smaller than AA.
Exact specs
| Designation | AAA (IEC: LR03, ANSI: 24A) |
|---|---|
| Diameter | 10.5 mm |
| Length | 44.5 mm |
| Nominal voltage | 1.5V (alkaline) |
| Typical capacity | 860–1200 mAh |
| Chemistry options | Alkaline, NiMH rechargeable (1.2V), lithium (1.5V) |
What devices commonly use it
Small remotes, compact flashlights, glucose meters, wireless keyboards, and some children's toys use AAA cells because of their slimmer profile.
What it's interchangeable with
NiMH rechargeable AAA and lithium AAA cells are drop-in compatible with the same size constraints as their AA counterparts.
What it's NOT interchangeable with
AAA cannot substitute for AA — too narrow in diameter and shorter in length. The voltage is the same but physical fit is incompatible.
Common mistakes
- Substituting AA where only AAA fits because voltage matches.
- Ignoring capacity difference when switching between brands.
- Mixing old and new cells in devices with multiple AAA slots.
