What devices commonly use it
TV remotes, wireless mice, flashlights, wall clocks, portable radios, toys, and game controllers commonly require AA cells.
What it's interchangeable with
NiMH rechargeable AA (1.2V) works in most devices designed for alkaline AA, with slightly lower voltage that rarely causes issues. Lithium AA cells are drop-in compatible and perform better in cold temperatures and high-drain devices.
What it's NOT interchangeable with
AA cannot substitute for AAA — physically too large. C and D cells are also a different format entirely.
Common mistakes
- Mixing new and old cells in multi-cell devices.
- Mixing alkaline and rechargeable NiMH in the same device.
- Using AA where a device specifies AAA because they "look similar."
